Nursing’s Lessons for Life

I am so fortunate to be in a profession that has taught me more lessons in life than any other career choice could have.

I listened to my heart, however naive it was at the age of 17, and chose to go into nursing. Little did I know at that time that it would become my everything. It ignites my passions, while humbling me to understand that I actually know very little.

In my short 3-year nursing career thus far, I’ve learn and grown from experiences which have been driven by a measly attempt at understanding the complexities of humanity.

Humanity is so incredibly intricate that none of us will ever gain full understanding. Yet I’m in the position of confronting it in its most raw and vulnerable form every single day as a critical care nurse.

I often feel like an old soul trapped in the body of someone in their 20s (albeit perfectly fitting for someone who has the same name as your grandma’s cat). But I’ve come to realize that nursing provides exposure to a level of humanity that I will never fully comprehend.

To be able to intimately view all the possible human emotions in a 12-hour shift alone is an absolute privilege. From the challenges that come with comforting the dying, to feeling palpable joy for a patient who…
